Why Does Toothache Occur?
Why Does Toothache Occur?
Toothache is a discomfort that negatively affects our social life, can occur due to various problems and can cause various problems. Basically, toothache can have many different causes. However, decay and inflammation that usually occur in the teeth are shown among the main causes of toothache.
When decay or inflammation is not treated, it can cause even more severe pain by abscessing. In addition, hot-cold food or beverage sensitivity caused by the wear of tooth enamel also causes toothache. First of all, the necessary method is to determine the cause of the pain with a detailed examination for treatment. However, it may be necessary to treat toothache at home in the middle of the night or in cases where there is no opportunity and time. Determining the cause of toothache is a procedure that the dentist can do. The causes of toothache can be decayed teeth, dentin sensitivity, fallen filling, impacted teeth and gum problems. Toothache can manifest itself in a mild or painful way. However, the most important point in all these cases is to identify the problem.
Is Toothache Caused Only by Tooth Decay?
Toothache is a side effect that usually occurs with tooth decay. Although it does not only occur with tooth decay, caries in general is the most common factor that causes toothache. If the person with toothache has decayed teeth, the food residues that are consumed cause discomfort by getting stuck or accumulating in the decayed area, which has lost its normal tissue destroyed by decay. In this case, an unbearable toothache occurs. This toothache may wake the person up from sleep at night or not sleep at all. When the sleep problem starts, it means that the bacteria have reached the pulp of the tooth, which contains the vessels and nerves. In other words, the bacteria are now in contact with the dental nerve and this causes very severe pain. If the teeth feel like they are dazzling for a short time only when eating or drinking something sweet and it passes within a few minutes, it probably means that there is a decayed tooth.
Toothache and Dentin Sensitivity
Toothache may not always manifest itself when caries occurs. If there is cold and heat sensitivity in the teeth, this is also among the reasons that can cause toothache. If there is a sudden intense pain in the teeth only when you consume cold or hot foods and this pain disappears quickly after the effect of the cold or hot substance disappears, there is probably sensitivity to cold or heat in the teeth. On the one hand, since the root surfaces of the teeth are exposed due to gum recession, it is very normal for cold and heat sensitivity to occur due to thermal stimuli such as cold and heat. This cold and hot sensitivity is called dentin sensitivity in medical terms.
Toothache and Impacted Teeth
Another important factor that causes toothache is impacted teeth. Third molars, popularly known as wisdom teeth, are the teeth located at the end of the jaws and therefore cannot be cleaned very well. Since they cannot be cleaned effectively, they can often decay unnoticed and cause toothache. Since wisdom teeth cannot reach the surface of the inside of the mouth, they can damage the second molar right in front of it. Wisdom teeth can often cause pain in the back of the jaw, ear, eye and even in the neck area. The only treatment for impacted teeth that cause toothache is immediate extraction. Otherwise, other teeth may also be lost or a cyst may form in the area. Again, swelling may occur in or around the painful area. Since this is also caused by infection, antibiotics may be recommended.
Toothache and Gum Inflammation
Toothache may not always be caused by tooth decay or sensitivity. Toothache may also occur from time to time due to gum disease. Even if the teeth are healthy, various problems may occur in the gums. Symptoms of gingivitis are bleeding, discolouration, gingival recession, gingival enlargement, tooth displacement, spacing, abscess, swaying or elongation, tenderness and bad breath. Toothache is usually accompanied by abscess formation. Pressure-induced toothache is felt due to inflammation in the gums. Therefore, after the inflammation is treated, the complaint of toothache also goes away.
Toothache disturbs the person more at night due to some hormonal and physiological reasons. As it usually causes insomnia, it also seriously negatively affects social life. Therefore, when toothache occurs at night, there are various methods that can be applied at home since it is not possible to urgently consult a dentist and receive treatment. These methods that can relieve toothache include cold compresses applied to the cheek for 20 minutes at regular intervals, clove oil applied to the aching area with cotton wool, mouthwash with salt water and medicinal drugs that are good for toothache. However, these methods are not definitive methods that can be a solution to toothache. They are only applications to relieve and relieve pain for a while. Therefore, it is necessary to see a dentist as soon as possible. The cause of toothache is found through the dentist and the methods to be applied after the cause of toothache is found are determined.
Of course, these methods may vary according to the cause. If the cause of toothache is due to sensitivity, desensitising toothpastes can be used. These toothpastes contain substances such as fluoride and potassium, which are good for such problems. However, open root surfaces can be covered with protectors such as fillings or prostheses. In such cases of pain or sensitivity, some simple procedures that can be applied at home can also reduce sensitivity or pain. Mouthwash with warm salt water and brushing the gums with a soft toothbrush in a rounded manner can help toothache to some extent.
